(TBIC) - About 3000 goats and sheep from United Arab Emirates (UAE) imported into Vietnam did not suffer from zoonotic diseases and no threats for disease spreading, re-affirmed Nguyen Duc Thu, head of Ninh Thuan Provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.

This re-affirmation came after some Vietnamese newspapers recently told that these goats and sheep bred in quarantine in Ninh Thuan province are almost old, teeth-loss animals and are under the risk of infection of many dangerous diseases as well as the threat of spreading of these diseases; the export of these animals is lacking in quarantine documents of the exporting country. Thu told that this information completely lacked trusted justification and might have negative impacts on international economic cooperation as well as direct influence on the positively growing cooperation between Vietnam ’s local agencies and enterprises with UAE. In addition, Thu showed evidences in the legal documents for importing the above number of goats and sheep into Vietnam, including of attestation of breeds of the livestock (Awassi sheep and Jazeri goat) provided by the local HungViet joint stock company, attestation of quarantine and inoculation for goats and sheep from UAE against some zoonotic diseases before the importation; certificate for animals imported and bred in quarantine (by the Centre of Animal Heath of Region VI – State Department of Animal Heath). Concerning the large number of the dead livestock, Thu explained that due to changes in the living environment, a flock of sheep and goats has not yet got accustomed to the climate, rearing, nutrition and water conditions in Vietnam . Especially, due to bad effects of the storm No1 with long-rainy days, the livestock which are familiar with dry and hot climate, scratched their nails and were suffered from some diseases such as diarrhoea and pneumonia, some of them got their legs crippled. Some goats and sheep were too old to adapt to the new environment, then got malnutrition and died in the quarantine process. This is a normal phenomenon of livestock in general as sheep and goats were moved to live in a new environment, said Thu. Earlier this year, a flock of 3000 sheep and goats imported from the UAE granted for Vietnam under part of a cooperative program between Vietnam and the Middle Eastern country through the Emirati company TAMOUH Investments LLC. Through the program, TAMOUH would give the local farmers loans to raise sheep, and to export the meat back to the UAE. Viet Nam News Agency |
